Shaping transformation, operating sustainably

Sustainable management calls for long-term planning and execution. That’s why we offer guidance to our customers on transformation, innovation, and collaboration.

Sustainability has a long tradition at LBBW, a strong universal bank with regional roots. For over 200 years, we’ve been helping shape the transformation of companies, the business world and society, and we’ll continue to do so going forward. We’re constantly working to ensure that our own activities remain sustainable while supporting our customers as they strive to improve the sustainability of their operations. We’re always available to assist them in all aspects of sustainable investing and financing, and we help them as they move towards sustainable business models. Our three key approaches are:

  • Assisting transformation with responsible guidance and support for our customers
  • Promoting innovation with new forms of financing for new technologies
  • Ensuring cooperation because working with others is how change succeeds

Sustainability Advisory – consulting sustainably

The need for information on sustainability is growing. LBBW’s three Sustainability Advisory teams meet this demand, catering to companies, financial institutions, charitable foundations, NGOs und institutional clients. They offer specialist knowledge combined with guidance and assistance at the implementation stage. The experts at LBBW advise banks, savings banks and institutional clients on structuring their own portfolios in line with ESG criteria and on issuing social and green bonds.

Transformation

Supporting changes:

Sustainable development frequently calls for new business models and substantial investment – for example in alternative energy sources and digitalisation. As a bank, we believe we have a special role to play, providing support for transformation at the financial level.

Innovation

Promoting ideas:

Transformation calls for new technologies, bold ideas and innovative financial products. We are therefore working flat out on our offers, developing our expertise in areas like green financing while supporting customers in their innovation processes.

Cooperation

Boosting collaboration:

There’s no better way to shape changes than by working together. That’s why we set such great store by cooperation – exploring new forms of collaboration with customers and business partners. Our aim is to bring people, companies, pioneers and politicians together.

In the debate on climate change, we have to move away from the much touted notion that ecology and the economy are diametrically opposed and hence irreconcilable.

Operating responsibly: our Code of Conduct

In our day-to-day activities, we are guided by the LBBW Code of Conduct. This determines our behaviour, our ethics and the way we deal with customers, business partners and society. The Code sets down the rules, values and principles governing the behaviour of all the employees within the Group. Rainer Neske, Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors at LBBW, sums up our Code of Conduct clearly in stating, "We aim to be non-bureaucratic – but rule-compliant. To fulfil our customers’ requirements – but in the right way. To do business – but not at any price."

Sustainability Report 2023

As a public-sector institution, we are committed to our mission to serve the common good. As a Landesbank, we are responsible for our region’s development. As a purely customer-focused bank, we want to actively contribute to the future viability of our economy and society. Sustainability is therefore an integral part of our corporate strategy and business policies.
